Cultural suitability considerations

If you are starting something new, or found a beautiful animal hat that you forgot you made, please consider the following:

Incoming refugees coming from Muslim traditions may have been raised with cultural prohibitions against dogs and pigs. If you create patterns in your work, please do not include these.

Incoming refugees who follow more traditional customs may take the scriptural objection to idolatry to heart. Please avoid creations with recognizable characters.

Thanks everybody!

Love, Warmth, & Welcome made tangible, for refugees

Hand-crafted items are imbued with the love of the person who made them. Ask any Canadian knitter or crocheter - there are thousands of beautiful warm woollens already made and squirrelled away in drawers and closets that were crafted with love and need a home. Hats that need heads, mitts that need hands, scarves that need necks, slippers that need feet. This grassroots project aims to collect and distribute these donated warm things to people arriving in Canada. The first Canadian winter can be a shock to newcomers, and many of them are underprepared for winter. We are expecting 25,000 refugees in the coming months. How many of them can we outfit in handmade winter warmies - 100? 500? 5000? 10,000? All of them? This effort is being spearheaded by crafters, from their laptops on their kitchen tables, using social media and word of mouth, figuring it out as we go along. We need mitts, hats, scarves, slippers, sorting, logistics, and liaisons to get the woollies to the people who need them. Let's do this!
